Insurance issues arise for senior travellers to Turkey

Turkey has recently witnessed an upsurge in the number of senior visitors to the country but travel insurance for over 65s' is often an issue as according to research by Defaqto, nine out of ten policies generally impose upper age limits.

Research by Sainsbury’s Bank from 2006 shows that over 65s from the UK total 5.5 million trips abroad every year, representing a 36 per cent increase from 2001.

The number of senior visitors to Turkey alone has almost doubled in four years, from 48,000 in 2001 to 83,000 in 2005, according to the Office of National Statistics.

However, figures from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office also reveal that one in seven travellers, of all ages, do not to take out adequate travel insurance.

Paul Green, head of Saga Group Communications, has warned older travellers of the importance of travel insurance and said that they "should not just choose [their] policy based on price but also consider if it covers any pre-existing conditions".
