About Turkey

A country spanning two continents where east meets west and 10,000 years of civilisation, Turkey is a treasure trove of history and culture.

Driving in Turkey

Hiring a car is an excellent way to see Turkey, especially to visit archaeological sites and other areas which can be difficult to reach by public transport.

Drivers must be over 21 years of age and have held a driving licence for at least one year. Please note the following important points:

  • Traffic drives on the right in Turkey, which means you must give way to the right at junctions and roundabouts (vehicles joining the roundabout have right of way).
  • Always carry your driving licence and passport.
  • The wearing of seat belts is compulsory.
  • There are strict drink driving laws - the rule is absolutely no alcohol if you intend to drive. Random tests are quite common and police will issue on the spot fines.
  • The speed limits are 120kph (70mph) on motorways, 90kph (55mph) on main roads and 50kph (30mph) in built-up areas.
  • If another vehicle flashes it's lights, this means that it is coming through, not that they are giving way to you.
  • You should drive defensively at all times, and great care should be taken when driving after dark as you may come across inadequately lit vehicles, slow moving lorries or animals wandering across the road.
  • Road signs in Turkey conform to international standards, although you might like to familiarise yourself with the following terms: dur (stop), yavas (slow), tehlike (danger), girilmez (no entry), tek yon (one-way), yasak bölge (forbidden area), park yapilmaz (no parking).
  • Petrol stations sell super and normal petrol (benzin), diesel (mazot), and unleaded petrol (kursunsuz). You are more likely to be using the latter.
  • Should you have an accident, however minor, please do not move your car. Contact your car hire company immediately, they will advise you further.
