Bodrum and the Bodrum Peninsula have a wealth of differing landscapes and hidden treasures including traditional rural villages, small coastal resorts and superb cruising.
Steeped with more than five thousand years of history, culture and mythology, the Bodrum peninsula and the Aegean shores of Turkey are home to some of the most significant historical sites in Turkey as well as some of the most scenic landscapes.
Basing your holiday to Bodrum on the peninsula allows access to numerous interesting places and nearby historical sites you can visit on a day out. A short drive from Bodrum in the hills around Milas are two fascinating sites, both idyllic picnic spots. Peçin Kalesi dominated by a dramatic cliff-top castle, and Labranda, an ancient site dedicated to Zeus, built high in the pine-strewn hills. Milas is known for its beautiful carpets a century-old tradition which has passed through the generations. The local weavers rarely mind a visitor watching them at work.
Just north of the Bodrum Peninsula, the ancient Roman city of Iasos, famous locally for it's olive groves and fresh, abundant local fish has numerous Roman buildings, including an agora, theatre aqueducts, cisterns and baths. Whilst the beautiful Temple of Zeus at Euromos, built in the 6th century BC, is one of the best preserved temples in the whole of Turkey. Nearby Bafa Lake offers home to duck and other wetland birds that nest on it's many islands, and it is also close to the ancient city of Herakleia and the Carian rock tombs.
Further north still lies the ancient hillside city of Priene, the theatre of Miletus and the marvellous Temple of Apollo at Didyma, famed almost on a par with Delphi for it's prophetic powers. Yet the most magnificent of all is ancient Ephesus, site of one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world - the Temple of Artemis dedicated to the goddess of fertility. It is believed that the Virgin Mary spent her last days in a small house on the edge of Ephesus and that St John the Evangelist came here from Patmos to look after her. Now a place of pilgrimage for Roman Catholics, the house has received the official sanction of the Vatican, and a commemoration ceremony is held every year in August.
These are just a few suggestions to enhance your stay, there are many more ideas for sites to explore, secluded beaches, interesting walks and some fun activities too. We appreciate some that guests may well be interested in exploring the area independently, whilst others will enjoy being part of a group or activity with a fully qualified guide. Our experienced overseas team can provide a wealth of ideas and suggestions for places to visit and things to do. We can also offer private guiding for guests who prefer to do their own thing with the added benefit of a local guide.
All in all we're certain you will be at turns dazzled and seduced by the riches of this wonderful region - a holiday in Bodrum to remember.
